Megadeth Reaches No. 1 on Billboard 200 for First Time in Band’s 40-Year Career

Thrash metal legends achieve career milestone with self-titled final album after decades of near misses

After more than four decades of delivering thrash metal to the masses, Megadeth have finally reached the summit of the Billboard 200 chart. The band’s self-titled seventeenth studio album debuted at No. 1 in the week ending January 29, marking the first time in their storied career that they’ve topped the prestigious chart. The achievement comes poignantly as the album serves as the band’s final studio release.

Released on January 23, the album represents both a career pinnacle and a farewell, giving frontman Dave Mustaine and his bandmates a historic send-off after years of coming tantalizingly close to the top spot.

Breaking the No. 2 Curse

For a band that has placed 23 releases on the Billboard 200 since their 1986 debut “Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?,” the No. 1 position had remained frustratingly out of reach. The band’s previous best was No. 2, achieved with 1992’s “Countdown to Extinction,” one of thrash metal’s defining albums.

Other strong showings included 2016’s “Dystopia” and 2022’s “The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!,” both of which reached No. 3, while even 2013’s more divisive “Super Collider” managed to hit No. 6. Yet somehow, classics like “Rust in Peace” and “Youthanasia” never quite broke through to the top.

Paradoxically, it took the band’s swan song to finally claim the prize that had eluded them for 40 years.

The Numbers Tell the Story

According to Billboard, Megadeth sold 73,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. during the album’s first week of eligibility. This represents the band’s best first-week performance since Billboard began using its multi-metric consumption model in 2014, easily surpassing the 48,000 units moved by “The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!” in 2022.

The breakdown reveals a clear story: physical formats drove the success. Of the 73,000 total units, 69,000 came from actual album sales. Physical formats, CD, vinyl, and cassette, accounted for 56,000 of those sales, with vinyl leading the charge at an impressive 22,000 copies, the band’s strongest vinyl performance in the modern era.

The album was strategically released in over a dozen vinyl variants to appeal to collectors, along with an exclusive Target CD edition featuring a bonus track and an expanded digital version with additional material. This approach to physical releases proved crucial, as streaming contributed a comparatively modest 4,000 units, equivalent to approximately 4.23 million on-demand streams.

Billboard noted that while the achievement is historic for Megadeth, the 73,000-unit total represents the lowest first-week figure to secure a No. 1 debut since May 2025, reflecting broader industry trends in album consumption.

The Band Celebrates

Following the chart announcement, Dave Mustaine expressed deep gratitude for reaching this milestone at the conclusion of Megadeth’s recording career.

“After 40 years of delivering Megadeth music and playing shows around the world, I have nothing but gratitude at this moment,” Mustaine stated. “Finding out that our last Megadeth record is also our first No. 1 only further validates my will to go out on top.”

“Thank you to my family, Teemu Mäntysaari, James LoMenzo, Dirk Verbeuren, and Chris Rakestraw, and to all our fans for making this possible. Without you, Megadeth would not be as successful as we are. I’d also like to thank the people behind the scenes: our management, Danny Nozell, Justis Mustaine, Steve Ross at CTK, and our label BLKIIBLK/Tradecraft.”

The current lineup also shared their reactions. Guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari responded with enthusiasm: “Absolutely amazing news! Thank you and congrats to our entire extended Megadeth family!”

Bassist James LoMenzo added: “I want to sincerely thank all our friends and fans who grabbed a copy, we’re over the moon!”

Drummer Dirk Verbeuren captured the significance of the achievement: “It feels unbelievable to sit atop the charts with an album that’s uncompromisingly Megadeth. Huge thanks to all of you who support us, you made this happen! See you on tour!”

The Final Chapter

The album’s release was strategically coordinated with the January 22 premiere of the documentary “Megadeth: Behind the Mask,” which provided additional context and emotion to the band’s final studio offering. The documentary gave fans an intimate look at the band’s legacy and the creation of their farewell album.

Megadeth will embark on their final tour beginning February 15 in Victoria, British Columbia. For countless fans around the world, these shows represent the last opportunity to experience one of thrash metal’s most influential and enduring acts in a live setting.

The fact that Megadeth’s first No. 1 album is also their last creates a bittersweet but fitting bookend to a career that helped define an entire genre. After 40 years of near misses and close calls, Dave Mustaine and Megadeth have finally claimed the top spot, proving that persistence and uncompromising artistry can ultimately be rewarded, even if it takes four decades to get there.
