Wacken Open Air Reinforces the “Holy Ground” After Last Year’s Weather Chaos

Wacken Open Air has unveiled a series of major infrastructure improvements aimed at preventing a repeat of previous year’s extreme conditions, as detailed in a recent video published on the festival’s official YouTube channel. At the center of these changes is the iconic “Holy Ground,” which has been significantly upgraded to better withstand heavy rain while improving the overall experience for fans.

Reflecting on last year’s challenges, the organizing team admitted they had to rethink several initial ideas. One early plan involved installing large surface panels in front of the two main stages to stabilize the terrain. However, this approach proved more complicated than expected. “We thought, okay, panels are there, the budget is there, we want to improve something, but then some people told us: please don’t do it like this, because water would collect in a very unfavorable spot.”

In addition to revising that plan, the team also focused on restoring the festival’s drainage systems. Trenches and water runoff channels, which had become clogged with mud during the previous edition, were cleaned and flushed to ensure proper water flow. Still, the risk of accumulation remained, leading organizers to pursue a more comprehensive solution.

Instead of scaling back, Wacken doubled down on its efforts. The amount of ground covered with panels, originally planned at around 10,000 square meters, has now been significantly expanded across the entire site. “We took those 10,000 square meters and basically doubled them,” the organizer states, noting that the panels now extend far beyond the main stages to include pathways, food and drink areas, and even sections of the camping grounds. The goal is clear: to make movement across the festival safer and more manageable, even in heavy rain.

These improvements are also expected to benefit accessibility. Fans with mobility challenges, including those supported by initiatives like Wheels of Steel, should find it easier to navigate the terrain. The organizers openly acknowledged last year’s difficulties and emphasized their intention to improve conditions for all attendees.

Another major focus highlighted in the video is protection from the elements. Alongside ground reinforcement, the festival has introduced new roofing solutions across the site. “The second big keyword, besides the ground panels, was roofing measures,” the organizer explains. Large covered seating areas, umbrellas, and sun sails have been installed to provide shelter not only from rain but also from strong sunlight, offering a more comfortable environment in all weather conditions.

Comfort has also been addressed through an increase in seating options. “The third keyword we focused on was seating,” the organizer adds, explaining that additional benches and rest areas have been installed throughout the grounds. These spaces allow fans to take breaks, eat, drink, and recharge between concerts, contributing to a more enjoyable overall experience.

As emphasized throughout the video, these changes are the result of extensive planning and reflection. “We really tried to make the festival better on all levels,” the organizer concludes, highlighting the significant effort invested in improving both infrastructure and fan comfort.

While everyone hopes for clear skies, Wacken Open Air is making sure it is ready for any scenario. With expanded ground coverage, improved drainage, additional shelter, and enhanced accessibility, the “Holy Ground” is being reshaped to handle whatever the weather may bring, ensuring that the focus can remain where it belongs: on the music.
